A new clinical trial comparing two categories of anti-retroviral medications has been launched in the US, it has been announced.

Patients with HIV sometimes develop cognitive disorders as a result of the infection attacking their brain and central nervous system (CNS).

Anti viral drug for RSV infection achieves Phase I results
Positive results have been released for the trial of a new anti viral drug designed for RSV infection.

Data from the Phase I inhalation trials of ALN-RSV01 were made public at the 18th Annual Drug Delivery to the Lungs meeting held in Edinburgh, with delegates being told that all major objectives were achieved.

New study for arthritis drugs
Dundee University is spearheading a £26 million trial investigating the safety and efficacy of medication for arthritis, which currently affects about nine million predominantly elderly people in the UK.

Under the Standard care versus Celecoxib Outcome Trial (SCOT), academics from the university are to compare traditional anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen with the newly-developed counterpart celecoxib.

Obesity drug begins fourth Phase III trials
Biopharmaceutical company Orexigen Therapeutics has begun the fourth round of Phase III clinical trials for its flagship obesity treatment.

The clinical trial consists of a 56-week study that will assess the safety, potential side-effects and efficacy of its obesity drug Contrave in healthy, non-diabetic, obese patients.

South Africa 'underutilised' for clinical trials
South Africa is not being used enough as a site for clinical trials of new drugs, according to one expert on the country's role in the industry.

Catherine Lund, who founded OnQ Consulting, an organisation which helps firms conduct clinical trials by helping identify sites and providing patient documents, told news website Outsourcing-Pharma.com that the country remains "underutilised" despite the advantages it can offer firms.
