ALS drug gets orphan status |
A drug designed to treat an inherited form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has received orphan drug designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Isis Pharmaceuticals said that its antisense drug ISIS 333611, which is designed to be delivered into the cerebral spinal fluid, has been given the nod from the FDA to treat patients with ALS. |

Hypertension drug for diabetics begins phase II trials |
A new phase II trial of a renin inhibitor designed to treat hypertensive diabetics has been launched, it has been announced.
According to the American Diabetes Association, between 20 per cent and 60 per cent of diabetics have hypertension, with the condition increasing the risk that a patient will develop complications such as a stroke. |

The US Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan designation to a new drug designed to treat patients suffering from hereditary antithrombin deficiency (HD).
ATryn, developed by GTC Biotherapeutics, is a form of an anti-coagulant, anti-inflammatory protein that patients who do not suffer from the condition have in their blood naturally. |

Lymphoma drug to undergo phase II trials |
Phase IIb clinical trials of a monoclonal antibody designed to treat patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are to be launched, it has been announced.
Drug firm Seattle Genetics said that research into its SGN-40 medicine would be conducted at more than 60 test centres across the world, with around 200 patients expected to be enrolled into the study. |

AML drug trial enrolment 'completed' |
Patient enrolment into a study of a drug designed to treat adults aged 60 or over who have been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) has been completed, it has been announced.
Genzyme Corp said it had recruited 109 patients who have not previously received treatment for the condition into its phase II clinical trial of Clolar, which is being conducted at research centres across the US. |
